If two phenomena are correlated or otherwise appear related, one might assume that one is causing the other; however, it may be that they have a common cause. For example, ice cream sales and sun cream sales are likely to correlate strongly, but neither is caused by the other, instead both are influenced by the common cause of a sunny summer's day.
